Salary: In accordance with the APSEA/NSTU Agreement

Position Scope:

The Counsellor provides personal and career counselling to students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The counsellor provides consultative support to students, school staff and parents, and liaises with community agencies. The Counsellor reports to the Provincial Supervisor of Programs for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Qualifications And Experience:

  • Ability to obtain a valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification (minimum teaching certification ITC)
  • Ability to be Certified as a Counsellor by the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development
  • Masters of Education Degree in Counselling, Counselling Psychology or equivalent (Minimum 10 recognized graduate level courses);
  • Minimum 350-hour supervised practicum component (inclusive of 120 direct hours and 20 group hours), preferably in a school-based practicum setting
  • Masters degree in Education of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing or equivalent combination of education and experience and enrollment in or commitment to enroll in and complete the Masters degree in Education of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience, preferably teaching experience with students who are deaf or hard of hearing of all ability levels, including those with additional challenges

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development
  • A broad understanding of issues relevant to deafness and psycho-social development
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in ASL would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Culturally responsive with the ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity
  • Regular travel that requires the use of a personal vehicle is a requirement of this position
