( View ASL )

American Sign Language (ASL) Learners in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia

Parents and other adult family members, come join APSEA’s team of specialists in education for children and youth who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing to learn more about the Bedrock Literacy Curriculum. This adult learning program is designed to share with you a general overview of the curriculum, giving you practical examples of proven learning strategies that you can apply with your child at home and in your communities. This adult learning program gives you an opportunity to talk with APSEA’s experienced professionals in the field of Deaf and hard of hearing education who are applying these learning strategies with students every day.

Why this curriculum?
Deaf students are usually expected to develop English literacy skills using curricula and strategies designed for hearing children. The Bedrock Literacy curriculum is designed specifically to meet the needs of students who are Deaf and use ASL as their primary mode of communication. With this curriculum, students learn from activities that work towards helping them develop effective communication skills in both languages. This approach begins with concept development that can more fluidly be translated into ASL and English languages.

Strategies Supporting ASL and English Literacy at Home
Program leaders will share strategies that you can use at home and in the community to encourage your child’s literacy in both languages.

Grounded in best practice in education for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, join APSEA professionals introducing this curriculum to learn more. We look forward to seeing you!
