A family is a unique composition, each member with a distinct personality. In families with children, the behaviour systems within the family, influence how a child or youth interacts with people outside of the family unit. Families with Deaf members have additional, unique dynamics that a family with all hearing members may not intuitively understand. Some of these dynamics may have a direct impact on a child or youth’s learning journey. Consider the responsibility for a child or youth who also interprets ASL/English for a family member, like in the award-winning moving CODA. Understanding can also be lost in translation for a Deaf child or youth, as with any differing languages. By learning more about communication dynamics for families with Deaf members, we can help bridge understanding gaps, building stronger, inclusive communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to:
- explore communication dynamics that may exist in a family with Deaf members, with people who have lived experience
- participate in a conversation in both ASL and English, through an interpreter
- share perspectives on the movie CODA (Children of Deaf Adults)
