After reading an excellent post from Paths to Literacy: Texture Walk that a teacher made for her student, we were inspired to make a walk that continued our outdoor theme. This walk can be very similar to the one that is in the link above, or, instead, as you explore the out of doors, collect various items that can be taken with you (not the neighbours’ plants or flowers!) and used for a game of exploration hopscotch. For example, grass, rocks/stones, weeds, sticks, herbs, etc.

Draw your hopscotch board as usual and place your collections in each square. Each square should contain only one kind of plant or outdoor material. Then when you throw your rock, get into that square and explore with your toes or your fingers or even your nose! (When safe to do so, of course!) To make a tactile hopscotch board, you can use pieces of cardboard, small mats or hula hoops.

Hopscotch board on pavement, different outdoor sensory items on each square

In this example there is a hopscotch board drawn in yellow chalk on a black driveway. The layout is a set up with a pattern of squares.

Square 1 (starting square) is coloured in yellow to indicate that that is the beginning square.

Squares 2 and 3 are beside each other. Square 2 has sticks placed on it and Square 3 has lavender

Square 4 is a single square and has the word free written in purple chalk

Square 5 is a single square and has hosta leaves on it.

Square 6 and 7 are beside each other. Square 6 has the word "free" written in purple chalk, Square 7 has rocks on it.

Square 8 is a single square and has mint stalks

Finally, there is a rounded shape to indicate the finish of the hopscotch board
