APSEA Braille Club

Grades: 1 and up

Begins October 25 and runs until June 2023. *Acknowledging that students may not be able to participate each week, we encourage flexible participation and ask that students attend as often as their schedules allow throughout the school year.

Join us in this opportunity for braille readers from across the Atlantic Provinces to come together and celebrate all things braille! Participants will meet other students who know (or are learning) the code. Our philosophy is to encourage braille literacy in an inclusive, collaborative, social, and flexible learning environment with opportunities to connect with students from the four provinces. Lessons and games will integrate reading, writing, math, and tactile graphics. Braille and tactile materials used during sessions will be provided to students; program facilitators will connect with itinerant teachers following registration to determine students’ interests and current braille skill levels. Led by Shauna Power and Jennifer Hurren.

Required Materials and Setting: Braille Device (Perkins, Mountbatten, BrailleNote Touch+, et cetera.), braille paper, headphones, or quiet space (free from background noise), a device to connect to the internet (laptop, iPad, Chromebook).

In this cohort, students may have the opportunity to:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of personal competencies (e.g., braille reading, math, and writing skills).
  • Participate in virtual group activities with peers (braille readers)
  • Encourage the efforts of peers (braille readers).
  • Use assistive technology tools to access virtual program
  • Recognize braille writing mistakes (proofreading).
  • Enhance braille organizational skills (e.g., storage of hard copy braille, bookmarking, etc.).
  • Learn about the UEB math code to support student’s access to math curriculum
  • Interpret tactile graphics by responding to questions asked of the student.
  • Interact with mentors who are braille readers (e.g., university students or members of the community).

Registration closed.
