The APSEA Student Mentor Program provides an opportunity for interested students who are blind or visually impaired and in grades 2-7 to be matched with a teen mentor (grades 8 and up). Led by Jennifer Fancy, APSEA Mentor for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired, and in collaboration with APSEA Virtual Learning Series program facilitators, this program will provide younger students with a positive role model who has a shared experience of navigating life as a student who is visually impaired or blind. This multiage program is a great way for younger students to connect with older peers who have lived experience, and a great way for older students to share their knowledge while also building confidence and leadership skills.
Students will have opportunities to participate in engaging activities with peers from across the Atlantic Provinces, via the Zoom Health online platform. Mentors (grades 8+) and Mentees (grades 2-7) will be matched based on enrollment, shared interests, and life experiences. After completing the APSEA Student Mentor Program, teen mentors will receive a certificate from APSEA to formally acknowledge their hours of participation as volunteers in this program.
