Understanding Your Rights as a Student with a Visual Impairment | Grades 6+

Did you know that as an individual with a visual impairment you have rights? Along with the APSEA Mentor for Children and Youth who are Blind or Visually Impaired, and guest speakers from the BVI community, we will explore rights, experiences with discrimination, and strategies to be effective advocates.Knowing your rights as a student with a visual impairment will help you know when you need to advocate for your needs.

Part 1

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Discuss prejudice and stereotyping.
  • Give examples of prejudice and stereotyping from their experiences
  • Define and identify examples of discrimination.

Part 2

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify how discrimination can impact expectations.
  • Explore the disability rights movement
  • Discuss laws and legislation and their impact on the rights of individuals with visual impairments in Canada.
