There is more to math than numbers! Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are only part of the equation. Arithmetic word problems offer multiple opportunities for language development. Understanding the language of those problems can help students to solve them as well as develop better listening and spoken language skills, as they work collaboratively through the problem-solving process of mathematics.
Students in this program will have opportunities to:
- Explore the language clues embedded in mathematical word problems.
- Practice recognizing mathematical language for deciding on what mathematical procedure to use.
- Describe their mathematical reasoning in their own words.
- Use mathematical language to explain the problem and solution.
