Self-determination allows students with visual impairments to learn how to advocate for themselves and ensure that their visual needs are met. Part of that is learning about the structure and function of the eye. This allows them to better understand how their eye condition affects these structures.

Here is an activity to get started on learning about your eye condition:

  • Draw/create a picture that represents your eye condition and explain it to a family member, friend, or pet.
  • Here are some things you could draw/create a picture to represent:
    • Light sensitivity
    • Nystagmus
    • Difficulty seeing up close or far away
    • Accommodations that help you in your environment (home, school)

Extension activity:

  • Have a discussion of ways that you can protect your eyes? (e.g. sunglasses, wide brimmed hat, eye-breaks, less screen time).

Tip - Engage all Learners by Using:

  • High contrast colours – e.g. dark writing on white/bright background
  • Different textured materials from around the house – e.g. corrugated cardboard, bubble wrap, string, fabric, foil, tissue paper, jewel stickers, etc., and/or
  • Add textures or scents

Most importantly have fun and be creative!
