APSEA Auxiliary

History

The APSEA Auxiliary, originally known as the Halifax School for the Blind Auxiliary, was founded in 1974 and now includes representation from retired APSEA staff and interested individuals. The mandate of the APSEA Auxiliary is to raise funds for children and youth who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or visually impaired.

Objectives

Bursary Awards: To award 6 bursary awards to APSEA students on a yearly basis.

Monthly Requests: To respond to monthly requests by providing financial assistance to mitigate expenses for specific student needs.

Examples are:

Financial assistance:

  • For the purchase and /or the maintenance of prescribed audiological and vision devices, as well as related supports deemed necessary for the students’ successful use of the devices
  • For the purchase of technology and adaptive equipment to enhance sensory, motor and communication skills.
  • For post-secondary application fees, graduation fees and class trip fees
  • For travel expenses to medical appointments
  • For the participation in recreational and cultural activities

Other requests submitted by APSEA staff, parents/legal caregiver (or other, with APSEA Staff and caregiver approval) that relate to the specific needs of the student, are always considered.

Fund Raising

Presently, the APSEA Auxiliary is supported by donations from APSEA staff, the APSEA Local of the NSTU, parents, interested individuals, church groups, community organizations and businesses. Donations are always appreciated and cheques may be made payable to the APSEA Auxiliary. The APSEA Auxiliary is a CRA charitable organization and tax receipts will be issued upon request.
