APSEA Volunteer Driver Program

Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority (APSEA) is more than just an agency – it’s a community dedicated to empowering children and youth across Atlantic Canada who are Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing (DHH), blind, have low vision (BLV). Since 1975, we’ve been on a mission to provide inclusive, responsive, and flexible educational services. Now, we want you to join us as a volunteer driver!

Volunteer drivers assist by driving APSEA employees who are blind and low vision (BLV) to work related activities such as programming and/or meetings. You will drive a rental vehicle or your own vehicle (you’ll receive mileage at the Provincial rate of $0.589 per KM). Trips may be for a partial day or over multiple days, with the expectation of a hotel stay for multiple days of travelling. Note: APSEA will pay for your meals and accommodations during longer trips outside of your region.

As a volunteer, you have an important role in representing APSEA and sharing in its mission and values. As an organization we will provide you with training and support to prepare you for this important role.

Our Program requires:

  • A three month commitment to onboard you as a Volunteer driver.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle, as volunteers will be driving APSEA employees to and from work related activities.
  • A reliable mode of contact for you as a volunteer. You will be contacted as trips are scheduled and given the opportunity to opt in depending on your interest and availability.
  • A flexible schedule, as time allocated to volunteering will vary week to week depending on the trips scheduled per month; busy periods/times change seasonally. Volunteers are notified via email or phone call of up-coming trips as far in advance as possible.
  • May require evening or weekend shifts depending on the monthly schedule of programming/events offered by APSEA.
  • A safety-first mindset by following safe driving procedures and keeping your license and insurance details updated.
  • Ability to guide an individual. Training on this will be provided to all volunteers.
  • May require an overnight stay in a hotel as required.
  • Adherence to our 100% smoke free requirement.
  • Adherence to APSEA policies, procedures, standards and guidelines including employee confidentiality.

What do we need from our volunteers?

  • You understand that the program requires flexibility, as our employees respond to the scheduling and programming needs of APSEA learners.
  • You understand that APSEA programs and services provide meaningful opportunities for learners who are blind, have low vision and their families, strengthening our supportive and welcoming community.
  • You enjoy meeting a variety of people and have the patience to wait for an employee to finish a work related activity.
  • A positive attitude, interacting with members of the public and APSEA employees in a polite and respectful manner.
  • Proactive and reliable communication with APSEA and the employee, to confirm travel arrangements with parties by phone or email.
  • You are an experienced driver who has obtained a full/valid drivers license, and have an acceptable driving record.
  • You carry a minimum of $2M third party liability insurance on your 100% smoke free vehicle and are willing to have a criminal records check, and regular driver abstract checks completed.
  • The vehicle used for transport must have an up-to-date Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) sticker.
