Deaf Awareness: Coffee Conversations

Come together with a warm tea or coffee to learn and ask questions on a variety of topics about Deaf Culture and working with a Deaf student. Each session will be led by Deaf Mentors. ASL/English interpreter services will be available.


Session 1

Deaf Culture 101 – Learn about appropriate ways to interact with a Deaf person including how to get their attention, where to look when having a conversation, and Deaf culture norms (e.g., pointing is not rude).

Session 2

Help! There's no interpreter! – Tips and strategies will be shared to help school staff answer the question, “What do we do?” in situations when an interpreter is not available.

Session 3

Misconceptions about Deaf people – Common myths and misconceptions about Deaf people will be addressed. We also encourage you to submit a question in advance that you always wanted to know but were too afraid to ask! Questions will be presented anonymously during the session.

When: 3 weekly virtual sessions, sign up for one, two, or all three! Each session is 30 minutes and has multiple time offerings.

Audience: School staff (teachers, support specialists, lunch monitors, duty teachers, etc.) who work with a learner who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing and are interested in increasing their awareness of Deaf Culture.
