Program Details

Join Shirley Corbett, APSEA Speech and Language Pathologist, Jen Hurren, Acting Coordinator for Atlantic Provincial Connections - BVI, and Jennie Bovard, APSEA Education Support Specialist – BVI Mentor, as they aim to empower parents and caregivers with strategies and tools to promote literacy development in children who are blind and visually impaired.  The focus will be on creating accessible literacy environments at home, using materials and methods that accommodate visual impairments, and fostering the necessary skills for reading, writing, and communication.

Topics we will cover:

  • Importance of accessible literacy for children who are blind and visually impaired
  • Different types of accessible literacy tools and technologies
  • Practical strategies to promote early literacy skills at home
  • Resources and activities that support reading and writing development for children with blindness and visual impairments
  • Creating a literacy-rich environment that fosters the development of language and communication skills
